Yesterday, on 9th January, in the early hours two Mosques in Croydon were attacked with racist Islamophobic graffiti.
West Norwood Islamic Centre, which is prominently located on Norwood High Street – just two miles up the road from our kitchen, was attacked with the racist message “STOP imigration islam” daubed across its side wall.
Three miles south, daubed on the wall of the South Norwood Islamic Community Centre on Clifford Road was the sinister slogan “Remigration”.
Remigration in its current usageĀ is an Islamophobic political slogan used by far-right racist groups across Europe to refer to the forced return of non-European immigrants – specifically Muslims, and their descendants to their place of racial origin, with no regard for their citizenship. It’s essentially a call to ethnically cleanse Europe of its Muslim population – a precursor to full blown genocide as we witnessed in Bosnia.
The scrawling handwriting suggests the same perpetrator might have taken part in both attacks.
The Resistance Kitchen strongly condemns these racist Islamophobic attacks and demands the Metropolitan Police act swiftly to bring the perpetrators to justice for these heinous hate crimes. We stand in solidarity with our Muslim community who bear the brunt of religious hate crimes in the UK.
The latest government figures released March 2024 show that whilst race hate crimes have fallen by 5%, religious hate crimes have increased by 25% with Muslims the primary target at 38%, up 13% from the previous year.
These are alarming figures which the Metropolitan Police should not ignore. They need to act now to safeguard the Muslim community. The perpetrators of these attacks – one on a busy high street – shouldn’t be that difficult to track down and apprehend, providing that the will to do so is there.
