For Immediate Release –
Resistance Kitchen’s ‘10 Pledges for Croydon’ gains widespread backing ahead of local elections
Resistance Kitchen’s ‘10 Pledges for Croydon’ has won strong support just one week after launch, with 74 candidates across five political parties now backing all 10 pledges.
The campaign calls on candidates standing for mayor and council to commit to priorities shaped by Croydon residents, including housing, policing accountability, mass surveillance, council divestment from genocide, and policies that disproportionately affect deprived communities, including PSPOs, gambling shop proliferation, the lack of public toilets, and access to free drinking water.
Every ward in Croydon now has candidates supporting the pledges, giving residents the chance to vote for candidates who have signed up to the campaign.
Support has come from candidates in the Green Party, Liberal Democrats, Your Party, Workers Party, and Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC).
The Croydon Green Party has fully adopted all 10 pledges, saying they align with values it already supports.
In sharp contrast, no Labour candidate has backed a single pledge so far.
A spokesperson for Resistance Kitchen said: “The response to the 10 Pledges for Croydon shows there is real demand in our borough for politics that starts with people’s daily lives. These pledges come from the concerns we hear every week in our community, and they are about basic dignity, accountability, and justice.” They added: “It is encouraging to see so many candidates back the campaign, but it is disappointing that Labour has so far refused to support even the most straightforward commitment as free drinking water for homeless residents. Croydon residents deserve better than empty claims of representation while ignoring the realities people face on the ground.”
Resistance Kitchen is a Croydon based community kitchen that provides food support while campaigning for social justice and against the root causes of poverty.
The campaign is also attracting attention beyond Croydon, with other communities already interested in adapting the pledges locally.
