“Let my best teacher see my painting” – 6 year old writes to HMP Bronzefield

Six year old pupil has written to the director of HMP  Bronzefield prison to stop withholding mail from his teacher, Fatema Zainab, to let her see the painting he sent her four weeks ago.

Four weeks ago we hand delivered several children’s paintings, along with other mail, to HMP Bronzefield for #Filton10 detainee Fatema Zainab. Fatema Zainab volunteers at a community school, her young pupils miss her and sent paintings to her to “make her happy”. Unfortunately after 4 weeks she still has not received the paintings or the other 29 items of mail we hand delivered.  It seems the prison is arbitrary withholding her mail for no justifiable reason.

Last week we wrote to the Director of the privately run prison, Jonathan French to complain about this and other serious restrictions and abuses Fatema Zainab is facing.

Letter to HMP Bronzefield – Maltreatment of #Filton10

This week one of Fatema Zainab’s pupils, 6 years old Amirali has written a letter to “Mr French”. He wrote:

Dear Mr French

Please let my best teacher see my painting.

I miss her.

Thank you.

Amirali age 6

He finished his letter by drawing two rainbows hoping they will soften Mr. French’s heart and let his teacher receive his painting.

Another 30 letters awaiting delivery...

We have collected another 30 letters and postcards from the community for Fatema Zainab, but unfortunately we were denied a visit this week so will, inshAllah, be delivering them next week. Apart from withholding mail, the prison is also severely restricting visits to the #Filton10 – they are only allowed 1 visit for every 6 visits other remand prisoners are entitled to.

Follow His Example - Write To Mr French

We urge the community to follow Amirali’s example and write your own letter to Jonathan French, the director of HMP Bronzefield. A sample letter is included below for you to tailor to your taste. Or better still write your own, our detailed letter has the required information.

For Attention:
Jonathan French, Director of HMP Bronzefield

Dear Jonathan French,
I am [ deeply concerned | shocked | appalled | disgusted ] by the [ maltreatment | abuse ] of Fatema Zainab Rajwani, who has been detained at HMP Bronzefield on remand for over 2 months.

Why has she been subjected to repeated “random” degrading intrusive medical tests at a frequency not permitted by prison regulations. [ This amounts to torture, it | Such inhuman degrading treatment ] breaches Article 3 of the Human Rights Act.

Every detainee had the right to receive mail. Why is her mail being withheld from her?

Why is Fatema Zainab not allowed to practice her religion freely? Prison officers need to respect her right to wear hijab; she should be allowed Islamic books; and be able to attend Islamic functions in prison.

Why are you enforcing an arbitrary non-association order on Fatema Zainab and the other Filton women which severely restricts their visitation rights, and bars them from prison activities?

These policies of isolating Fatema Zainab, both externally – from her family and friends and internally in prison from other detainees, are impacting her mental health.

I [request | demand ] you [look into | immediately stop] this [ maltreatment | abuse ] and lift the [unfair | draconian] restrictions imposed on her.

Awaiting your reply

Yours sincerely
